First Nation Pushes Back on Alberta Law

Saddle Lake Cree Nation, east of Edmonton, says it plans to establish a safe haven for gender-affirming care within its territory, defying restrictions brought in under Premier Danielle Smith's government.

Treaty Rights at the Centre

Chief Dale Steinhauer called the province's law dehumanizing, arguing that access to health care, including gender-affirming care, is protected under treaty rights that predate provincial jurisdiction.

No further details on timing, location or scope of the planned safe haven have been announced.
