Old Ottawa East is one of Ottawa's most walkable neighbourhoods, and a slow walk through it rewards attention. This self-guided tour covers the highlights in about 90 minutes — or considerably longer if you stop to eat and drink, which you absolutely should.
Start: Cummings Bridge (Riverside Drive)
Begin at the Cummings Bridge on Riverside Drive, which marks the eastern boundary of the neighbourhood. Stop in the middle of the bridge and look north and south along the Rideau River — you'll understand immediately why this riverfront location is so coveted. Then walk west toward Main Street.
Main Street Corridor
Main Street is the neighbourhood's spine. Walk it from north to south, taking your time. You'll pass The Green Door at 198 Main — step in even if you're not hungry; the space itself is worth seeing. Note the independent shops, the absence of chains, and the way the street feels human-scaled and unhurried.
Holmwood Avenue
Turn off Main Street onto Holmwood Avenue and walk east toward the river. This is one of Old Ottawa East's most beautiful residential streets — lined with mature trees and a mix of century homes ranging from modest to genuinely grand. The streetscape here is quintessential inner-city Ottawa.
Brantwood Park
At the eastern end of Holmwood, you'll reach Brantwood Park. Walk the perimeter of the park along the Rideau River, particularly the section closest to the water. In any season, the views are excellent. If it's summer, people are swimming; if it's winter, someone is probably skating or skiing on the river trail.
NCC Eastern Pathway
Pick up the NCC Eastern Pathway heading south. This paved multi-use trail runs along the river and is the neighbourhood's best outdoor amenity. Walk as far south as you like before looping back.
Springhurst Avenue and Community Garden
On your way back, detour through Springhurst Avenue to see the community garden — a genuine neighbourhood institution. Then head back to Main Street.
Finish: Coffee and Pastry
End the walk at Bridgehead or Clay and Tangerine. You've earned it.
