Ottawa's Carleton University is going old school. A growing number of professors are pulling laptops and phones out of lecture halls and asking students to take notes the old fashioned way: with pens and paper.

Why the Switch

The move comes as generative AI tools have become impossible to ignore in university classrooms. Professors say rapidly increasing use of AI for note taking, assignments and even in class work pushed them to rethink how lectures run.

An Ottawa Campus Story

Carleton, one of Ottawa's two major universities, is far from alone in wrestling with AI's rise on campus, but the shift back to handwritten notes marks a notable local response. For now, some Carleton students will be trading keyboards for notebooks.
