What happened
The first attack happened on Rideau Street near Sussex Drive at about 2:47 a.m., when a man stabbed a woman. Seeking safety, the woman boarded an OC Transpo bus, where she received medical treatment. She was left in life-threatening condition.
Suspect arrested near second scene
Police arrested a suspect, identified as Joachim Lessard, a 42-year-old man from Ottawa, near the scene of the second stabbing. He has been charged with two counts each of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and assault with a weapon, among other offences.
Why it matters for downtown Ottawa
The fact that the first victim had to flee onto a transit bus to find help underscores how exposed that corridor can feel overnight, even with foot traffic and transit service running through it.
What's not yet known
Police have not released details on a motive, the exact relationship, if any, between the two incidents beyond their proximity in time and location, or the current medical condition of the second victim beyond officials calling both injuries critical. Further updates on the investigation, including any court appearance details for the accused, have not yet been announced.
Ottawa has seen periodic violent incidents downtown, but back-to-back random stabbings of this kind, with injuries described as life-threatening in at least one case, mark a serious overnight event for the core. Residents and businesses in the Rideau Street and ByWard Market area may want to stay alert to any follow-up advisories from Ottawa police in the coming days.
