A Carnaval send-off to summer
Ottawa said goodbye to summer in style this year. The LatinSparks Festival returned to LeBreton Flats on Saturday, September 5, running from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., with a lineup built around Latin American food, music and dance culture.
Local Instagram account @ottawaisnotboring flagged the event ahead of time, calling it a way to "say goodbye to summer with an epic day and night of music, dancing, and celebration." The post promised a packed schedule, and by most accounts the festival delivered.
What was on offer
The day's programming leaned into everything that makes Carnaval-style festivals a draw: food vendors serving up Latin American dishes, live bands and DJs keeping the music going for hours, and dance performances scattered throughout the afternoon. Organizers also ran free dance lessons, giving newcomers a chance to pick up some basic steps before the crowd got moving.
The centerpiece was the Carnaval parade, a staple of the festival's identity, bringing costumed performers and dancers through LeBreton Flats as the event built toward its evening peak.

LeBreton Flats has become one of Ottawa's go-to outdoor festival spaces, thanks to its open sightlines to the Ottawa River and downtown skyline and its capacity to handle large crowds. For a multi-hour event with a parade route, food vendors, and a stage setup, the site gave LatinSparks room to spread out without feeling cramped, something more compact downtown venues can't always offer.

With festivals like LatinSparks slotting in right at the seasonal turn, late-summer weekends in Ottawa increasingly double as one last outdoor blowout before fall programming takes over. Events like this one add to the city's growing reputation for cultural festivals that go beyond the usual bluegrass-and-beer-tent formula, giving Ottawa's Latin American community, and anyone curious to join in, a proper stage.
