Ottawa's summer just got a lot more explosive. Les Grands Feux du Casino Lac-Leamy, the beloved fireworks festival held right across the river in Gatineau, returns this week and runs from July 29 to August 5, giving locals one more reason to make the short trip over before summer winds down.
What Is Les Grands Feux?
This annual pyromusical competition brings together fireworks teams from around the world — this year featuring pyrotechnicians from Canada, France, Brazil and China — each choreographing a synchronized fireworks-and-music show over Lac Leamy. It's one of the largest events of its kind in the region, and it's practically in Ottawa's backyard.
Why Ottawa Should Care
For Ottawa residents, this isn't some far-flung festival you need to plan a road trip for. Casino Lac-Leamy sits just minutes from downtown Ottawa, easily reachable by car or a quick rideshare across one of the interprovincial bridges. Plenty of Ottawa locals treat the National Capital Region as one big backyard, and Les Grands Feux has long been a shared summer tradition for families and couples on both the Ontario and Quebec sides of the river. Many Ottawa neighbourhoods along the river — think New Edinburgh, Rockcliffe Park, and stretches of the Ottawa River Pathway — even offer decent glimpses of the fireworks without crossing the bridge at all, making it a low-effort, high-reward night out.
When and Where to Watch
Shows typically kick off after dark, so plan to arrive early if you want a good spot around Lac Leamy itself. If crossing into Gatineau isn't in the cards, keep an eye on the Ottawa River waterfront parks for a free, if slightly more distant, view of the show.

Since the festival runs through August 5, there's more than one chance to catch a show if your first night gets rained out or you just want to see multiple teams compete.
