Ottawa residents don't have to fight long weekend traffic to get a taste of cottage country. The National Capital Commission (@ncc_ccn) posted a reminder on Instagram this week that cottage season is alive and well right in the Capital, with plenty of ways to soak up those lake-day feelings without leaving the city.
"Summer's not over yet, and cottage season is going strong in the Capital," the NCC wrote, pointing followers toward a handful of spots built for exactly this kind of long weekend.
Four docks, one big water fix
Top of the list is a set of four public docks scattered around the region: the East Wharf dock, the Dow's Lake dock, the Museum of History dock, and the NCC River House. Each one offers a spot to sit by the water, dangle your feet in, or just watch the boats go by, no cottage deed required.
Bike the parkways, holiday Monday included
This weekend also overlaps with NCC #WeekendBikedays, when the parkways open up for cyclists, walkers, and runners to move through the city car-free. With a bonus holiday Monday attached to the long weekend, it's a rare three-day stretch to explore the parkway network at a slower pace.
Beaches, sunsets, and one last supervised swim
The post flags this as the last weekend for supervised swimming at Ottawa's beaches, so it's a good moment to squeeze in a proper beach day before lifeguards pack it in for the season. For those who prefer their water views without the swim, catching a sunset along the Ottawa River remains free and reliably scenic.
Patio stops and the OG cottage
For a bite between activities, the NCC points to the BarLakeside patio at Dow's Lake, conveniently close to that dock for a pre or post-swim stop. Beyond that, Ottawa's urban parks and shoreline patios are all fair game for soaking up the last stretch of patio season.
The post also calls out the Mackenzie King Estate as what it calls the "OG cottage," the historic Gatineau Park property once belonging to former prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. A free shuttle runs there from downtown Ottawa-Gatineau Saturday through Monday, making it an easy add-on for the long weekend.

Visitors hitting these spots can also scan a QR code at each location to enter the NCC's Summer Bucket List Challenge, which closes September 16.
