Ottawa Senators fans will see something they never expected on Saturday night: Daniel Alfredsson, the most beloved player in franchise history, standing behind the Toronto Maple Leafs' bench instead of Ottawa's.
Season opener at Scotiabank Arena
The Senators open their 2026-27 regular season against the Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday, October 3, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. It marks the ninth time in franchise history that Ottawa has opened a season against its provincial rival, a fixture that usually has Senators fans thinking about the matchup on the ice, not who's coaching against them.
Alfredsson's new role in Toronto
This year, the storyline is Alfredsson himself. He is joining the Maple Leafs behind the bench as an associate coach under head coach Jim Hiller. Toronto hired Hiller on June 17, then rounded out its staff by bringing in John Gruden, Alfredsson and Brad Werenka. The associate coach title is a rare one in Toronto's history: Alfredsson becomes only the second person to hold it, after Lane Lambert, who kept the job for a single season before leaving to become head coach of the Seattle Kraken.
From Ottawa's bench to Toronto's
Until very recently, Alfredsson was wearing Ottawa colours behind his own team's bench. He spent the previous three seasons as a Senators assistant coach, a job he took on in December 2023 and held onto the whole time. For Ottawa fans, the jump to a rival's coaching staff is a jarring one. Seeing him in a Maple Leafs polo on the opposite bench, on opening night of all nights, is the kind of image Ottawa fans were hoping to avoid.
What led here
Alfredsson's move comes in a season already full of change behind Ottawa's own bench. The Senators recently named Thomas Chabot their 11th captain in franchise history, with the longest-tenured player on the roster taking over from Brady Tkachuk just days before the opener ottown's earlier report. Chabot also made his preseason debut alongside fellow defenceman Jake Sanderson last month, after missing the first two exhibition games while waiting for the birth of his and his wife Marion's first child ottown's earlier report.
What to watch Saturday
With Chabot now wearing the captain's letter and Alfredsson working for the other side, Saturday's opener carries extra weight for Ottawa fans beyond the usual Battle of Ontario stakes. It's the ninth time these two teams have opened a season together, but the first time one of Ottawa's own championship-era legends will be standing on the visitors' bench wearing blue and white.
