Ottawa's former chief of the defence staff, Wayne Eyre, says he considered quitting "several times" as he battled the Trudeau government during his time at the top of the Canadian Armed Forces.
In a candid new memoir, Eyre recounts political clashes with the federal government over military misconduct, defence spending and Canada's support for Ukraine. He describes frustration with what he calls Ottawa's "inability to make decisions at the speed of war," pointing to friction between the military and the government that oversees it from the capital.
