Ottawa-area residents in the Ottawa Valley are following a homicide case out of Lanark County, where two Arnprior residents have been charged with second-degree murder nearly three weeks after a body was found inside a burned vehicle in Mississippi Mills, about an hour west of Ottawa.

What happened

Police and the Mississippi Mills Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in a wooded area off Ramsay Concession 12 shortly before 5:15 p.m. on Sept. 11. Inside the burned vehicle, investigators found the body of Colin Campbell, 37, a Mississippi Mills resident.

The charges

Lindsay Dolan, 37, and Dylan Zoobkoff, 33, both of Arnprior, were arrested in Regina, Saskatchewan, on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Each has been charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a dead body. Both remain in custody and were scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on Friday, Oct. 2.

The case was led by the Lanark County OPP Crime Unit, working under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

What it means for the region

For people in and around Ottawa who travel through Lanark County or have family in Arnprior and Mississippi Mills, the arrests close out a nearly three-week gap between the discovery of Campbell's body and charges being laid.

No further details on a motive or the relationship between the accused and Campbell have been released. Court proceedings in Perth are expected to provide the next update in the case.

Earlier this month

This case follows ottown's earlier report on the discovery of a body in a burned vehicle in Mississippi Mills, when police had released few details and were still investigating. It comes amid a string of serious incidents in the wider Ottawa Valley region this fall, including an attempted murder charge in Arnprior in July and a fatal Highway 17 crash near Arnprior in September.
