Ottawa Rapid FC's playoff hopes took a hit on Saturday, September 26, as the club fell 3-0 to AFC Toronto in a result that secured a Northern Super League postseason berth for the visitors.

How it happened

AFC Toronto broke the deadlock in the 44th minute when Lena Silano stripped Ottawa goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson of the ball and finished for her first goal of the match. Toronto put the result out of reach in the 82nd minute when Sarah Stratigakis, coming off the bench, scored the third goal. Goalkeeper Sabrina D'Angelo backstopped the clean sheet at the other end.

After the match, Silano credited her team's pressing game for setting up the second goal. "I feel like as a team we've been working really hard. Press is something that's our strength, so really happy that we were able to get a goal off that and just give us some good momentum going into the second half," she said.

The loss leaves Ottawa Rapid FC at 11-8-3 on the season, one point behind AFC Toronto in the standings. Ottawa did get a boost before kickoff with the return of leading scorer Delaney Pridham, who was back in the lineup after missing five games with an injury. It wasn't enough to slow down Toronto's attack on the night, and the Rapid will need results elsewhere to keep their own playoff push alive as the Northern Super League season winds down.

Toronto's postseason picture

For AFC Toronto, the win improved their record to 10-5-7, good for second place in the standings, and clinched a playoff berth. They join Montreal Roses in confirmed postseason spots, with the rest of the field still to be sorted out as the regular season closes. It's the kind of result that shows why Ottawa's remaining matches carry extra weight: every point now has direct playoff implications, both for Ottawa's own chances and for who they end up facing if they do qualify.

A one-point gap with games still to play is not insurmountable, but Saturday's performance, particularly the way Toronto capitalized on a turnover for the opening goal, showed the margins the club will need to tighten up. Pridham's return to the lineup is a positive sign heading into the final weeks, giving Ottawa back its top scoring threat at a moment when goals will matter most.
