Ottawa's Wateridge Village is getting its next big wave of rental housing. On Sept. 25, Rohit broke ground on The Avro, the second of three apartment developments the company is building within Wateridge Village, one of Ottawa's most ambitious master-planned communities.

What's being built

The Avro will bring 200 apartments to market, according to the project announcement.

Rohit's second project in the community

Chris MacKinnon, Vice President of Rohit Homes Ottawa, said the groundbreaking reflects the company's broader plans for the city. "This project demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the Ottawa market," MacKinnon said.

Who's building it

Ray Licari, President of Buttcon East, is leading the construction management on The Avro as Rohit's partner on the project. Buttcon has managed the delivery of Rohit's buildings within the community as the master plan continues to fill in.

Wateridge Village was originally master-planned by Canada Lands Company and is now developed by Build Canada Homes, a federal Crown corporation.

The Avro's 200 units add meaningfully to that pipeline at a time when Ottawa continues to face pressure on its rental housing supply.

Elsewhere in Ottawa housing

Wateridge Village's expansion comes as other parts of the city grapple with different sides of the housing file. Just last month, tenants at the west-end Accora Village raised concerns about a landlord's decades-long redevelopment plan for their community, worried it could push long-time residents out. The contrast underscores how uneven Ottawa's housing growth can look depending on the neighbourhood, new purpose-built rental going up on one side of the city while existing tenants worry about displacement on the other.

No timeline for The Avro's completion or leasing was included in the announcement.
