Ottawa is rolling out the welcome mat for what could be the biggest gathering of municipal leaders the city has ever hosted, as thousands of delegates pour in this week for the Association of Municipalities of Ontario's (AMO) annual conference.
What's Bringing Everyone to Ottawa
Mayors, councillors, and municipal staff from towns and cities across Ontario are converging on the capital for AMO's flagship event, where local governments come together to network, swap ideas, and, most importantly, push the provincial and federal governments for more predictable, long-term funding. With record-breaking attendance expected this year, Ottawa's downtown core is set to see a noticeable bump in foot traffic, hotel bookings, and conference-goers filling up restaurants and patios around the venue.
Why Predictable Funding Is the Big Ask
Municipalities across Ontario have been vocal for years about the gap between what they're responsible for, roads, transit, housing, water infrastructure, and the funding they actually receive. Unlike the federal and provincial governments, municipalities can't run deficits, which means unpredictable or one-off funding announcements make it nearly impossible to plan multi-year capital projects. Delegates at this year's conference are expected to press hard for funding formulas that are stable and long-term, rather than the grant-by-grant scramble many local governments say they're stuck with.
