Ottawa may be hundreds of kilometres from Brampton, but a massive illegal cannabis bust announced this week by the Ontario Provincial Police is drawing attention across the province, including here in the capital, where police have dealt with their own share of unlicensed grow operations in recent years.
What happened in Brampton
According to the OPP, investigators seized close to 4,000 cannabis plants from an illegal grow operation in Brampton, with an estimated street value of $1.5 million. Two men are now facing charges in connection with the operation. Details on the specific charges and court dates have not yet been released, but the scale of the seizure, nearly four thousand plants, makes it one of the larger illegal grow busts reported in Ontario this year.
Why it matters to Ottawa
Illegal cannabis operations aren't unique to the Greater Toronto Area. Ottawa Police Service has previously executed search warrants on unlicensed grow-ops and dispensaries operating outside Ontario's regulated retail framework, particularly in the years following legalization when a grey market of unlicensed sellers persisted alongside licensed storefronts. While Ottawa's legal cannabis retail scene has matured considerably, with dozens of licensed shops now operating across neighbourhoods like the Byward Market, Centretown, and Barrhaven, police across the province, including in the capital region, continue to monitor for illegal grow operations that skirt licensing, taxation, and safety regulations.
