Ottawa's Senators saw their season-opening winning streak end on Tuesday night, as the Detroit Red Wings beat them 5-3 behind a goal and an assist from Dylan Larkin.

The loss is the first of the young season for Ottawa, which had won its first two games.

Larkin returns with a goal

The storyline in Detroit's win was Larkin. He scored in his first game since asking for a trade, and finished with a goal and an assist in his season debut, according to NHL.com. His goal also gave Detroit its first lead of the season, at 13:14.

John Gibson made 22 saves for Detroit.

Who scored for Ottawa

The Senators got goals from Drake Batherson, Tim Stutzle and William Eklund. Samuel Ersson stopped 31 shots in goal for Ottawa.

Ridly Greig made his season debut for the Senators and finished with an assist.

Goaltending context

The Senators went into Tuesday's game with a question mark in net. As ottown reported on Wednesday, goalie Linus Ullmark was listed as out with an undisclosed injury in the lineup for the Red Wings game. He had left Monday's 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins after two periods, which coach Travis Green described as precautionary. The sources for this game recap do not say whether Ullmark's status has changed, so there is no update to pass along yet.

What led here

Ottawa arrived at Tuesday's game on a good run. Monday's win in Boston was led by two goals and an assist from Stutzle and a goal and an assist from Michael Amadio, moving the team to 2-0-0. You can read that story in ottown's earlier report.

What's next

The Senators do not have long to dwell on the result. They host Philadelphia on Thursday, a game that also falls on the home opener. Ottawa plans to welcome the family of former Senators goaltender Ray Emery to ring the ceremonial bell that night, as the team marks 20 years since the 2006-07 season, according to ottown's earlier report.

For fans heading out, the sources do not say whether Ullmark will be available against Philadelphia, or who will start in goal. That has not been confirmed in the material available so far.

One loss in three games is not cause for alarm, and the Senators still scored three times against Detroit. They will look to bounce back in front of the home crowd on Thursday.
